I am a teacher.
As I write this, I am about to enter my 4th year as a high school teacher. I teach in a pretty well funded and managed public school district at a fairly prestigious high school located in a wealthy suburb of a pretty average Midwestern city.
Don't worry -- I'm changing the names of just about everything involved here (see "Disclaimer"). Let's just say I teach at Herbert High School in the Asimov School District.
It should come as no surprise that my area of expertise is Language Arts.
It's a complicated profession, teaching. A lot happens on a daily basis, and I have a lot more responsibilities that just teaching.
Just about everyone out there has an opinion on education and teaching, but few have more expertise than once having been educated in the American public education system.
A lot of debate and politics surround education as well, and we are, of course, supported by the taxpayers.
This blog isn't about all that.
All I want to do here is record what it's like to be a teacher. It's more for my own reflection that anything else; I'm already in the profession, doing what I can to make it better, so I'm not trying to push an agenda or anything like that.
In fact, mostly what I want to do here is write and enjoy myself.
Occasionally you might find a political analysis or a rant about something that went wrong, sure. But mostly, I'm just here to think about my profession and the experiences therein.
Right now, I'm going to try to update once a week, likely on Saturdays or Sundays. That may fall off as the school year gets busier, but this schedule is what I'm aiming for.
I'm lucky -- I really love what I do, and I'm excited to go back to school for the new year. Hopefully, it'll stay that way.
Thanks for being along for the ride.
